The Art Institute of Chicago is one of the popular spots for engagement photos—and it's easy to see why!

It's also a popular choice for couples who have a City Hall elopement and want to continue their portraits somewhere beautiful afterward. With its incredible architecture, grand staircases, artwork, and unique indoor spaces, the Art Institute gives couples so many opportunities for creative and timeless photos.

I've photographed multiple sessions here, so I'm very comfortable working throughout the museum. But even when I know a location well, I still look for ways to make each session feel different.

That's especially important when working with couples who have their own ideas. I always want to hear what they have in mind and then work together to bring those ideas to life. My goal isn't to simply recreate the same photos I've taken before—it's to make sure your session feels like yours.

What About Crowds?

One of the biggest things to consider is when you plan to visit.

During the middle of the day—especially on weekends—the museum can get quite busy. For some couples, this isn't a problem at all. As a photographer, part of my job is knowing how to adapt and work around other visitors.

But I've also worked with couples who feel uncomfortable when there are large crowds around them. In those cases, I recommend considering a session closer to closing time.

If You Prefer Fewer People:

⏰ Consider scheduling your session about 2 hours before closing.
👥 There tend to be fewer people later in the day.
📸 Having more open space can make posing and moving around easier.
😌 A quieter environment can help couples who feel nervous about being photographed around lots of people.

Of course, every session is different, and even during busier times, there are ways to find quieter areas and work creatively with the space.

A Few Things Couples Should Know

There are also a couple of museum policies worth knowing before your session.

🌸 Real flowers aren't allowed inside the museum. If you'd like to bring flowers, artificial ones are okay.
👜 Be mindful of your bag size. Depending on the size of your bag, you may need to use the coat check. Smaller handbags are generally easier to manage.
👥 Expect other visitors, particularly during peak hours and weekends.
🎟️ Remember your admission. You don't need to purchase a separate photography permit for an engagement or elopement session, but you will need admission to enter.

Making Your Session Your Own

Because I've photographed here multiple times, I know many of the popular spots—but that doesn't mean every session has to look the same.

Some couples come in with specific ideas they've seen or want to recreate. Others simply want me to guide them throughout the museum. Either way, I love finding ways to incorporate their personalities into the session.

That's one of the biggest advantages of having an experienced photographer at a familiar location.

My name is Jesse Leon, and I’m originally from Woodstock, Illinois. Growing up, I always loved movies, but I never imagined working in the film industry or becoming a filmmaker myself. That changed during my sophomore year of high school when I took a multimedia production class and discovered my passion for working with cameras. I loved filming as a way to document the world around me.

One day, my professor encouraged me to start thinking about life after high school. At the time, I hadn’t considered any colleges, but she introduced me to Columbia College Chicago—a school known for its strong programs in media, film, and the arts. I was inspired by the creative freedom Columbia offered, and in December 2021, I received an email notifying me that I had been accepted for the Fall 2022 semester. I was thrilled, and I couldn’t have imagined the journey that was about to begin.

During my first semester, I enrolled in a class called Film and Television Production. For our final project, we had the choice to create a short documentary on a subject of our choice or direct a short scripted film. Directing a scripted film didn’t appeal to me as much, so I decided to make a documentary about my older brother, who had recently become a father at 19. Although I had never made or even watched many documentaries before, I was drawn to the idea of observing real life through the camera lens. That curiosity motivated me to teach myself how to film and edit a documentary.

After completing the project and sharing it with my class, I discovered a new passion—telling stories through real experiences. I realized that documentaries offer a powerful way to explore our society and humanity as a whole. Through this passion, I also began to gravitate toward photography. I hadn’t taken many photos before, but filmmaking helped me recognize photography as another way to document the world.

Through both filmmaking and photography, I’ve learned the importance of capturing the moments that define our lives—the celebrations, the milestones, the love. These memories, preserved through a photograph or a film, can live on forever. That’s what draws me so deeply to these art forms: their power to tell human stories and preserve them for generations to come.
